Close Up Observational Paintings with a Focus on Texture & Composition

We looked at natural objects for their distinct textures.  This also was the first time that many students used a viewfinder to compose their art.  Students placed their viewfinder (see the image on the left) over their subject matter until they found the best composition for their painting. This helps them to focus.

Students had the choice to use an underdrawing or begin with paint.

Texture & Color Mixing

How can you use your paintbrush to make the texture that you see?

... a work in progress...

The finished artwork.  This student artist chose to surround the leaf painting with a dark burgundy color because that is how he saw the composition both in reality & in his mind's eye.
