Starting with Collage

Hello from the first blog post from the FDNSC art room.... Although this is the very first post, it has been an active few weeks in the art room!  This blog will serve as one way for the community to have a window into what we are doing, what we are discussing, and what we are making.

The students began the year working in collage. Here we focused on discovering how we were able to transform paper into an arrangement of shapes (composition) that could be a design or a picture.  To begin, I showed them a precut shape of construction paper.  It was not very specific, rather, it was sharp & curved.  I asked them “What is it?” or “What does this shape make you think of?”  Students brainstormed ideas such as fangs, horns, wings, the moon, a cornucopia, etc.. Then, students were challenged to make their own collages starting with a paper shape that they were given.
